Placing a Line Baseball Bet
Find out what you should know about placing a line baseball bet. Great tips for beginners.
When betting on baseball it is important to understand that this type of betting is different than placing a wager on many other types of sports. The good news is that if you pay attention to what you are doing when wagering a line baseball bet you stand a good chance of bringing in a nice payoff. Sportsbooks readily admit they lose money during baseball season because it is so easy even for beginners to win.
One of the first things you should know about placing a line baseball bet is that point spreads typically do not apply in baseball. It just is not practical. In many games, the outcome is decided by only a point or two. So, instead a money line is use for baseball betting purposes.
The money line baseball wager determines the amount of money that is laid as well as the amount of money that is won when a bettor wagers on either the underdog or the favorite. Typically, the underdog will have a positive money line while the favorite has a negative money line. Money lines are commonly listed based on a $100 wager. If you have never bet on baseball before, the money line baseball bet can appear somewhat confusing. It is very easy to figure out; however.
Let’s say the Red Sox are playing the Yankees and the Yankees are favored to win. The money line in this case might be listed as:
Yankees -150 Red Sox +130
In the example above, if you wanted to bet on the favorite you would be putting up $150 to bet on the Yankees winning. If they do win you would collect a total of $250, giving you a $100 profit. Basically, you risk $150 to make $100.
On the other hand, if you decided to bet on the Red Sox then you would wager $100 to potentially win $130. If the Red Sox did come out on top you would bring in a total of $230.
