Reading the Odds

Professional odds makers are the ones who set the MLB lines for every game. So, what do those numbers mean?

A skilled gambler who has placed many bets for a number of years will be able to look at the MLB odds and immediately know what those different numbers mean. If you are a novice gambler and you want to try your hand at betting on a baseball game, you may not know what any of those numbers mean. It is important to know how to read the MLB odds before you place your bet. If you do not know what you are doing and you read them wrong, you could make a very costly mistake.

MLB odds, once you understand them, are much easier to bet on than other sports like football or basketball because with these sports, you have to use the point spread. MLB odds are set with money lines, not point spreads. For you to win your bet, the team that you wagered on only has to win. The odds that are given will tell you how much money you can win, or lose, on any given game.

When you are looking at the odds, a minus (-) indicates the team that is favored and a plus (+) indicates the team that is the underdog, the number that follows either the plus or minus tells you how much money you will win or lose, depending on the outcome of the game. For example, if you see [Dodgers +1.50], [Phillies -1.60] you must bet $16 to win $10 on the Phillies or you must bet $10 to win $15 on the Dodgers. Now that you can read the odds, you can place a bet and win some extra money.
