Based in Kansas City, Missouri, the Kansas City Royals play in the Central Division of the American League. The club has won one World Series in 1985, two AL pennants one in 1980, the other in 1985 and six West Division titles in 1976, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1984 and 1985.
In 1967, Kansas City was left without a professional baseball team for the first time in 84 years. This was because the Kansas City Athletics moved to Oakland. That same year, under Senator Stuart Symington threats, Kansas City was awarded with another MLB franchise, to start playing in 1969. The team was name the Royals after the American Royal Livestock Show, which was held in Kansas City every year since 1899.
