Team Information
Back in 1957, the New York Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers, decided to abandon the largest city of the United States and head to California. This left New York without a National League Franchise.
In 1959, the MLB was announced a third major baseball league, the Continental League.
The new team required a new name. Much were suggested,
but the ones that made an impression were "Bees", "Burros", "Continentals", "Skyscrapers", "Jets" & "Skyliners". Finally the owners decided for "Metropolitan Baseball Club of New York," or Mets. The name had a general acceptance among fans and press.
In 1962 the team had a rough start, losing almost every game, and not really achieving anything. Despite this, the team was loved by their fans, even with their losing ways or maybe because of them. They became well known for their ability to win and the image of lovable losers was beginning to flourish.
It was until 1969 that the New York team was able to win a World Series and the press started calling them The Amazing Mets or Miracle Mets. This amazing turnaround story is one of MLB's history greatest underdog tales and has since them inspired a lot of lost causes since then.
