Team Information
The year was 1860, when an amateur team was made with the name of Athletic of Philadelphia.
It wasn't until 1876 that the Athletics became part of the National League. They lasted only one season. Expelled of the National League, a later version played from 1882 thru 1891 in the American Association.
Known sometimes by the press as the Mackmen, in honor of their owner/manager Connie Mack, the Atheletics are also uncommonly called the Elephants or White Elephants. This originated after a commentary of the New York Giants manager John McGraw. Connie Mack, defiantly adopted the white elephant as the team's mascot. Thru the years, the color has been changing and is currently forest green and named Stomper.
