Team Information
The team was funded in 1883 as the Philadelphia Quakers, they are one of the oldest baseball teams that exist in USA. Then in 1890 they were renamed the Phillies. The name is taken from a nickname of their home city. Philadelphia. The Phillies are the longest-standing professional team with the same name in any American sport.
The Philadelphia Philles have had four strong winning streaks:
1890's when they had a very strong outfield force that included several Hall of Famers such as Billy Hamilton, Sam Thompson and Ed Delahanty.
In 1915 they won the National League Pennant and contended for another three.
In 1950 they became pennant winners as well.
In the late 1970's and early 80's they won five division titles (1976, 1977, 1978, 1980, and 1983), a first-half division championship in the 1981 split season, two National League pennants (1980 and 1983), and one World Series (1980)
Although present in various World Series, the Phillies have only won once, that was in 1980. Since then, the team management has been criticized for being cheap and not interested in winning. That was until 1993 magical run, when they fought the World Series against the Toronto Blue Jays, losing once more. Neither the Jays nor the Phillies have returned to the Post Season.
