Team Information
The beginnings of the San Diego Padres go back to 1969, when the team joined the MLB as one out of four new expansion teams. These teams were the Kansas City Royals, the Montreal Expos (Washington Nationals today) and the Seattle Pilots (now the Washington Brewers).
It wasn't until 1984, that the Padres won the National League West Championship, under Dick Williams management. Their team included veterans like Garry Templeton, Graig Nettles, Steve Garvey, Tony Gwynn and Rich Gossage.
Then in 1998, the Padres had their best year in history when they crowned themselves as the NL West division champions and defeated the Houston Astros in the NLDS, 3 games to 1. Their next victims were the Atlanta Braves who lost in the NLCS, 4 games to 2. Unfortunately the Padres succumb to what has been considered one of the best MLB teams of all times, the New York Yankees in the World Series. They were swept 4 games to 0.
