Team Information
The Tampa Bay Devil Rays are based in St. Petersburg, Florida. The team plays in the East Division of the American League.
Throughout the 80's and 90's the Tampa Bay area made several attempts to acquire a MLB team, among this were Oakland Athletics, Chicago White Sox, Minnesota Twins, Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers. In 1990 the Tropicana Field was built in St. Petersburg with the purpose of attracting a MLB team. In 1993 it was announced that the MLB would add two expansion teams for that season, it was assumed that one of the teams would be placed in St. Petersburg. However the teams were assigned to Miami and Denver instead.
By 1992, the San Francisco Giants were on negotiations with a group of investors from Tampa Bay. The idea was to move the team to the area but at the last minute the Giants owner, Bob Lurie, changed his mind and decided to keep the team in the city of San Francisco.
Finally, in 1995 the MLB awarded Tampa Bay with a new expansion franchise. On that year the Tampa Bay Devil Rays were born. They started playing in 1998.
