NBA History
In the year 1946 the Basketball Association of America (BAA) was founded. Then in the season of 1949-1950 the National Basketball League’s teams joined the BAA, forming a three-division league that was renamed the National Basketball Association (NBA), expanding the National Basketball Association to seventeen franchises. After that season the NBA reduced its size and established two different divisions, one for the Eastern Conference and another as well for the Western Conference.
Even though the Japanese-American Wataru Misaka was the first to break the color barrier in the 1947-48 season when he played for the New York Knicks, 1950 is clearly recognize as the year the NBA integrated with the addition of African American players by several teams including Chuck Cooper with the Boston Celtics, Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton with the New York Knicks and Earl Lloyd with the Washington Capitols. Nowadays, more than 50 years later, the NBA is made up of players of many different races. Over 80% of NBA players today are African American.
In 1954, the NBA introduced the 24-second shot clock. This rule consists of any of both teams does not attempt to score a field goal or the ball doesn’t make contact with the rim within 24 seconds of obtaining the ball, the play is stopped and the ball is given to its opponent. This rule has given a lot of more shooting and has discouraged stalling.
