Team Information
Funded in 1946, as the Tri-Cities Blackhawks of the National Basketball League, the team's name was shortened to Hawks upon moving to Milwaukee in 1951
In 1949, when the NLB and the BAA, merged to become the NBA, the Blackhawks reached the first NBA playoffs.
By 1955, the Hawks were one of the NBA's worst teams, so the franchise moved once more, this time to St. Louis Missouri. With the help of the drafts and the free agencies, the Hawks became one of the best teams on the NBA in less than two years, reaching the playoffs twice in a row. In 1957 they were defeated by the Boston Celtics and in 1958, taking revenge on the Celtics defeating them on game 6. They dominated the NBA for the next decade but destiny always seemed to put the Boston Celtics on their way to the NBA Championships. Both teams met in the finals on 1960 and 1961.
The Hawks always remained contenders, advancing every year deep into the playoffs and also conquering several division titles.
In 1968, the franchise was bought by Atlanta real estate developer Tom Cousins and Georgia governor Carl Sanders and it was moved to Atlanta, Georgia. Cousin's firm developed the Omni Coliseum at the Atlanta downtown with state of the art facilities.
