Also know as the 'Mavs', the Dallas Mavericks are a professional team based in Dallas, Texas. The idea started in 1979 when Norm Sonju and Don Carter requested that a professional basketball team was brought to Dallas, Texas. Dallas had been without a professional basketball team since the Dallas Chaparrals of the American Basketball Association, which moved to San Antonio and later became the San Antonio Spurs.
In 1980, the team paid $12 million entry fee to join the NBA and that same year the team started playing. The name came from the T.V. western classic 'Maverick'.
