Team Information
Originally called the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons, the Detroit Pistons name comes from the then owner, Fred Zollner. He also owned Zollner Machine Works which manufactured pistons.
The logo consists on a red basketball in a blue ring with the Detroit Pistons in white across the red ball.
The team's official colors are blue, white and red.
In 1949, the Fort Wayne Pistons started in the NBA, playing two NBA finals in 1954 and 1955. They lost on both occasions.
In 1957, Zollner decided to move the team from Fort Wayne to the Detroit, a much larger city that hadn't seen professional basketball since 1947, when the Detroit Gems moved to become the Minneapolis Lakers, now known as the Los Angeles Lakers.
In 1974 Zollner sold the team to Bill Davidson. He was unsatisfied in having the team located in downtown Detroit, so he moved them to the suburb of Pontiac.
