In 1995, the Vancouver Grizzlies along with the Toronto Raptors, became part of the NBA. They were both the first NBA teams to play in Canada since 1947, when the Huskies used to play for Toronto.
The Grizzlies first seasons were though on them, for this reason the original team owner, OrcaBay decided to sell the team, mostly because low attendance. The team was sold to businessman Michael Heisley in the year 2000. After considering St. Louis, Anaheim, New Orleans among others, it was decided to move the team to Memphis in 2001.
Their nickname was chosen after the original name 'Mounties' was rejected following objections from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The name has been kept upon moving to Memphis.
