Team Information
Based in Miami, Florida, the Miami Heat are the current NBA Champions after they defeated the Dallas Mavericks in the 2006 NBA Finals.
During the decade of the 80's, basketball became very popular and the NBA thought it would be good to expand the league from 23 teams to 26 by the end of the decade. In 1987, the NBA decided to endorse the bids of the cities of Charlotte and Minneapolis and leaving the third and final spot in doubt. They couldn't decide on which Florida city would receive the expansion franchise. This caused frictions between the representatives of Miami and Orlando. Finally it was decided that the NBA would expand by 4 teams. The Miami Heat and the Charlotte Hornets were to make their debut in 1988-89 season, while the Orlando Magic and the Minnesota Timberwolves would begin in the 1989-90 season.
