Team Information
Known in their beginnings as the New Jersey Americans, the team moved to New York on their second season (1968-1969). Their owner Arthur Brown, wanted a new name that rhymed with New York's professional teams, the New York Jets and the New York Mets, so he decided for the New York Nets before selling the team to clothing manufacturer Roy Boe.
By 1976 the ABA and NBL merged to form the NBA (National Basketball Association). As part of the agreement, four ABA teams were going to join the NBA. These teams were the Nets, Pacers, San Antonio Spurs and Nuggets. On their first season on the NBA, the New York Nets were surprised by the New York Knicks, when they forced the Nets to pay them $4.8 million for invading their territory plus the $3 million they had to pay to join the NBA.
These payments let the team short of cash and new arrangements were made to move the team back to New Jersey. Boe renamed the team New Jersey Nets.
