Orlando Magic entered the NBA as an expansion franchise in 1989. The franchise didn't really tasted success (just like the vast majority of new expansion teams on the NBA) until 1992, when the team's history changed dramatically with the first overall pick, of big man Shaquille O'Neal from Louisiana State University. His plays immediate made a positive impact on the Orlando team. He leaded the club to a 41-41 record. It was pretty obvious that the Orlando Magic were the
NBA's most improved team that season. O'Neal won the Rookie of the Year award and gained an All-Star status. The Magic missed the playoffs that year for being tied with the Indiana Pacers for the 8th and final spot on the playoffs in the Eastern Conference. The Pacers won the tiebreaker.
Later on, the Magic would get guard Anfernee Hardaway (known as "Penny" Hardaway). Combined with Shaquille, they would prove to be a lethal combination and a dominant force inside the NBA. They harvested the franchise's first 50 wins on a season, with a record of 50-32. They reached the playoffs for the first time in the franchise history. However the Indiana Pacers would sweep the Magic 3-0 despite being the underdog team for the playoffs.
