The Philadelphia 76ers name makes reference to the signing of the Declaration of Independence that was signed in Philadelphia in 1776. The 76ers franchise is the oldest one of the NBA's, they started playing in 1939. In their beginnings the team was based in Syracuse and they were known as the Syracuse Nationals. This changed when their all-time rival, the Philadelphia Warriors moved to San Francisco in 1963 and the Nationals took their place in the city of Brotherly Love, changing their name to the Philadelphia 76ers.
As an interesting fact, the 76ers have had more uniforms than any other NBA team. Since 1954 the team has changed at least 11 times their uniform designs in contrast with teams like the Lakers or the Boston Celtics that have kept their original designs almost intact since their beginnings.
