As the only major league franchise in the State of Oregon, the Portland Trailblazers won in 1977 their only NBA championship. Their name honors the pioneers that travel along the Oregon Trail, it was chosen on a name contest of 10,000 entries.
The Trailblazers have tried several strategies to improve their games with mixed success. In 1996, general manager Bob Whitsitt attempted using talented players that had questionable attitudes and/or criminal records. The strategy worked initially when the team reached the Western Conference Finals in 1999 and in 2000 but after a while, the strategy backfired. The Blazers were known as the "Jail Blazers" and after some embarrassing incidents outside the game court and playoffs failures, Whitsitt resigned after the 2003 season.
Those days are gone and most of the new players are young and showing promise, despite of not really reached success in the past years. Only time can tell were will the determination and ambition of this new crop of players will take the Portland team for the 2006-07 season.
