Relive Wisconsin vs. Arkansas

In this article, you will get a recap of the classic 2007 Capital One matchup between Wisconsin and Arkansas

The Capital One odds proved to be a rushing attack extravaganza, bringing two of the best on-the-run teams in the NCAA together with the No. 7 Wisconsin Badgers and the No. 1 Arkansas Razorbacks. Lead by Arkansa’s Darren McFadden (projected to be the No. 1 pick in the 2008 draft) and freshman P.J. Hill of Wisconsin, Arkansas got off to a head start early in the Capital One odds line as a small two point favorite in some sports books and 1.5 in others with a 45 total. It is interesting to note: Wisconsin finished with a better record (11-1) but ended up as underdogs to Arkansas’ 10-3 record anyway.

What separated Wisconsin from Arkansas with the Capital One odds was its impressive regular season “against the spread” record, which was 8-2-1 compared to the Hogs abysmal 4-8 ATS record. They were exceptional road teams in the regular season’s 12 games with identical 4-1 records. Arkansas’ strength included its dynamic running game (4th most productive in the country with 228 yards a game) Wisconsin also had a good running game throughout 2007 through PJ Hill and his 15 touchdowns, despite more of an emphasis on the passing game. Arkansas was unable to establish a true passing game throughout the season, with two quarterbacks splitting time for a combined total of 19 touchdowns. Wisconsin’s John Stocco proved to be an accurate quarterback, throwing only four interceptions which could have influenced the Capital One odds.

Offense for both Capital One odds teams has been great, averaging more than 30 points a game. Defenses were up to par as well, with Wisconsin ranking second in pass defense in the nation. Both had a habit of performing in big games, losing to the likes of Florida and Michigan which were part of BCS games. Because of this, many analysts say these teams could have had more fanfare than they actually had. Despite this history, Arkansas went into the Cotton Bowl fresh off a four year bowl game absence with a win over Missouri in 2003 and has continued to blaze champion ship trails ever since.
