The Tennessee Volunteers were named for the numerous and unexpected amount of people that volunteered for duty in the Mexican-American War, the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812 and the Texas Revolution.
The Tennessee Volunteers were part of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association from 1912-1921 but have been playing since 1891. They were then part of the Southern Conference from 1922-1931 and have since been part of the Southeastern Conference. The Volunteers play out of Neyland Stadium.
