Oddsmakers Do Not Control Line Movement
A football Vegas line is determined fairly and anytime a line moves it gives a good pointer to the gambler of how the general public is betting on any particular game.
Many people have a misconception of how a football Vegas line is born. They will often assume that oddsmakers get together and come up with a strategy that will allow them to make the most money and will adjust the line accordingly throughout the week.
 This is nowhere near the truth of how a football Vegas line is made. Many oddsmakers will look at all of the stats between two teams to decide the opening line. They often will compare the offense is rushing yards, passing yards, receiving yards, offensive line, quarterback, and even the offensive coaches. They will look at total offense of a team against the total offense of their opponent. Oddsmakers will also look at each team’s defense when determining a football Vegas line. They will study how each defense will match up against the other team’s offense to determine which team has the edge. They will look at the quarterback versus several defensive positions, all of the offensive line positions versus defensive line positions, how good of a tackling team each defense is, does the defense give up big pass plays and does the offense have a big pass play capabilities? These are several variables that oddsmakers will use when determining the opening football Vegas line.
 Many gamblers believe that oddsmakers directly determine if a line will go up or down. This also is incorrect. Once the original line on a football Vegas line has been determined the oddsmakers have nothing to do with how the line moves because the betting public will directly affect that. For example, if the New Orleans Saints are playing the Miami Dolphins and the Dolphins are a two-point favorite as an opening football Vegas line then the line will move accordingly to how the money is bet. If the betting public puts most of the betting money on the New Orleans Saints then you can quickly notice that the New Orleans Saints drop to a one point underdog or even become a one point favorite very quickly. When you see a football Vegas line move this fast then that will be a tale sign of how hard the money is going on the Saints.
