The AFL finally upped the ante to $400,000 for Namath, a figure totally off the charts at that time. The salary offer was too good for Namath to turn down, and he signed with the New York Jets. Concerned over future years of bidding wars, the NFL called a truce to the war with the AFL.

A settlement was worked out between the two factions, and there became one professional football league with two conferences. It was decided that the winners of each conference would meet for the NFL Championship, dubbed the “SUPER BOWL.” The Super bowl betting lines are the most played lines for the entire year.
