Betting Hockey Overtime Affects Betting Methodology
Hockey is being challenged by soccer for its fan base. Recent rule changes are fan-friendly but they have made betting hockey a risky proposition if the sports betting investor is unaware of the changes.
The National Hockey League has held down the 4th position in the popularity of professional sports leagues in America for over fifty years. In recent times, however, soccer has begun to make inroads into the lofty status of professional hockey. With the signing of soccer superstar David Beckham by the Los Angeles Galaxy of the Professional Soccer League, the hold of hockey on the American public is more tenuous than ever. The game of hockey has, historically, been a difficult game to follow on television. The networks and the NHL have tried many things in order to make the game more appealing to the television audience. At one point, they even tried a colored puck that could be more readily visible to the television audience, and that didn’t work. The betting hockey segment composes the majority of the television audience for NHL games. With the initial appearance of Beckham and the Galaxy shattering all soccer television milestones, hockey’s foothold is in jeopardy.
NHL Commissioner Gary Beckman is betting hockey rule changes will make the game more spectator friendly. The most controversial change affected the final score of games. Ties are now played out into a five minute overtime period followed by a sudden death shootout. This innovation translates into more opportunity for the favorite to win the game in overtime. Bettors must be aware that the underdog can no longer be content with playing for a tie. Betting hockey requires a vigilance of the lines on the part of the sports betting investor, or the alternative may be writing out another withdrawal slip at the bank.
