The Fight in Hockey

The practice of fighting in hockey is a decades old tradition that allows for a team to balance out the rough treatment of their prized scorers by defensive power houses. However, recent incidents have brought to attention just how dangerous the practice can be.

The sport of hockey has a lot of traditions. The most important of those though would likely garner mass suspensions and fines in any other major sport. Considered unsportsmanlike in nearly every other arena, fighting in hockey is a part of the game. Some people will go so far as to claim that the only good parts of hockey are the fights.

Online hockey betting can go as far as to offer fans a chance to pick the next fighter from a particular team (in some cases, not that hard of a task). For all those cementhead players out there though, there’s been a recent rise in the amount of players getting injured in fights and the media attention that swings directly upon a sport when things start to go wrong.

With that attention has arrived the question of whether its acceptable to allow fighting in a major, world class sport as a normal part of the action. When players like Colton Orr are single handedly knocking out Tedd Fedoruk and sending them to the hospital for a night, many argue that the tradition is being surpassed by simple brutality.

With the changes have come comments on how the sport has changed and how players no longer stand to each other and fight honorably, but rather shell up and take the punches. The logic behind the tradition is based on the practice of hardy defenders hard checking forwards too much. Unnecessarily rough play is often met with angry responses and fighting ensues. Online hockey betting doesn’t cover just who will break the bones of another.

But as a man six and a half feet tall punches, and breaks the bones of, a man over half a foot smaller than him, the result is a practice that is no longer a matter of leveling out the honor of two men and making it fair shake for those hard checks. It becomes dangerous to players and the sport and less of the playing field leveling out and more of two men putting on an exhibition for fans, trying to outshine the other. They are all too happy to give their fans a reason for online hockey betting fun.

Regardless of what the league decides to do, the practice of fighting in hockey is one that goes back decades and were it to be banned, the entire sport would change. With the rampant changes made following the lockout of two years ago, it seems unlikely that the NHL would want such drastic changes to occur. But, at the same time, protecting its players and image is an equally important task that the NHL should take seriously.
