Growth and Expansion from 1917 to Today

The NHL started in the 1917 to counter the flailing NHA in Canada and has been around ever since as the sole proprietor of the Stanley Cup. This is a brief history of the NHL’s growth and expansion.

The NHL is nearly a century old, founded by Canadian Hockey fans in the early 20th century and lasting as the second oldest major sports organization in the country until now. And while you’re looking over the odds for your internet hockey gambling, keep in mind the history and tradition that the sport represents in major nations across the globe.

Back in those days it was not just the NHL on the ice. The National Hockey Association, Canada’s primary source of hockey entertainment was the big wig in town and well before the internet was even a pipe dream in the minds of mad scientists, there were disputes over the process.

Because of those disputes, the NHL was formed in 1917 with four teams. That first decade was a painful time as the league barely stayed afloat. However, by winning the Stanley Cup all but once in that time, the NHL soon became the only major Hockey Association around vying for the coveted hardware. Expanding to 10 teams, into the United States, the league was taking off. However, World War II decimated the league back to just 6 teams.

Those 6 teams, the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Black Hawks, Boston Bruins, and New York Rangers, are the original six teams. While the Ottawa Senators (one of the original four from 1917) later returned, it was these six teams that would remain the core of the NHL for the next 25 years.

Still a good 40 years away from internet hockey gambling, the NHL began to expand again in the 1960s. The rise of other Hockey Associations, ones that could vie for the Stanley Cup, and the desire for a major television contract drove the NHL to expand for the first time since the 20s in 1967, doubling in size to 12 teams. A couple years later, two more teams were added and four more in the ensuing years of competition for market share with the WHL (Western Hockey League). When the WHL folded in 1979, four more teams joined the NHL as remainders of that failed attempt.

During the 1980s, the NHL consisted of those 21 teams, and the sport flourished having found expanded markets in many of Canada and the United States’ many corners. In the 90s however, with growing commercial support and internet excitement and the shrinking of boundaries in where fans could be from, the NHL added 9 more teams to come encompass the 30 teams that now make up the league.

From humble beginnings almost 100 years ago, the NHL has had a steady presence in two major nations, and now across the globe. Whether you’re at the game every night or looking for one more good internet hockey gambling website, it’s a winter tradition as old as they come.
