Hockey Bet Good Investment on Stanley Cup Champ ’07-8
The NHL is facing a severe challenge from professional soccer, which threatens to erode the NHL’s fan base. It is imperative that the larger league franchises put more representative teams on the ice in order to improve public interest and to increase the dismal television ratings.
The National Hockey League is currently at the crossroads in its history. The league has maintained its strong arena attendance for the majority of its thirty teams. However, faltering television ratings in addition to a real threat on the part of the Professional Soccer League to make inroads into the core of NHL fans has NHL administrators grasping for straws in order to thwart any more losses. The signing of world- renowned soccer superstar David Beckham with the Los Angeles Galaxy has proven to the NHL authorities that the soccer threat is palpable, and that league officials must demonstrate strong, decisive leadership at this time. Commissioner Gary Bettman took a strong stand last year with serious fines and suspensions for thuggery on the ice on the part of players such as Chris Simon of the New York Islanders. The recent rule changes have been fan friendly, but the league must have stronger representation in the large franchised cities, such as New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.
It is a safe hockey bet to assume that the New York Rangers will be a vastly improved team as will the Philadelphia Flyers. Their improvement would mark a shift in the balance of power from the weaker franchises, such as Buffalo and Ottawa, to the big city franchises where the hockey game can garner real attention. The hockey bet for ’07-‘08 is that this shift will begin to take effect, and that a hockey bet on the Rangers or Flyers for Stanley Cup Champs would be a good gamble at this time.
