Team Information
Moved out of Atlanta in 1980, the Flames finally get to the western city of Calgary. They started playing their home games in the old Calgary Corral, original home for the Calgary Cowboys of the WHA. The flaming A was simply changed for a flaming C, considering that Calgary is an oil town the flames would fit properly on the concept behind the franchise.
During the 2004 playoffs, the city of Calgary became host to a non stop party, the Calgary team was rapidly becoming Canada's favorite team and were very popular. At least 100,000 fans flooded the avenue that heads west from the Saddledome after every game. Dressed in red they became the 'C of Red', and the avenue was referred as the 'Red Mile'.
The parties gained notoriety in 2004 as women began exposing their breasts in the famous avenue while being on top of shoulders or cars. The celebration was also known for being incident free as crowds remained positive and arrests were kept at minimum. Despite all of this, in 2006 the Calgary Police Service stated that the celebrations of 2004 would not be tolerated. The mayor Dave Bronconnier convinced the police to give the fans a break and the crowds were encouraged to head to the 'Red Mile' to celebrate. The Calgary police kept their zero tolerance against public nudity and public drunkenness.
