Team Information
Their beginnings go back to Boston, Massachusetts in 1971. This was the year when the New England Whalers was born. They played in the World Hockey Association (WHA). The team's first years were played in Boston's stadiums when they required to be a home team but due to lack of crowds the club would be forced to play their games in Connecticut. After selling out a couple of games, the franchise was moved to Hartford, Connecticut.

Then in 1979, the rival leagues merged with the NHL and as a result the Whalers were accepted in the professional league along with three other teams. The Whalers were forced to a name change because New England already had a pro NHL team, the Boston Bruins. They would be known as the Hartford Whalers.

After the 1996-97 season the team announced its decision to leave Connecticut due to the fact that no stadium contract had been possible to negotiate in Hartford. They decided to move to North Carolina and change their name to the Carolina Hurricanes and their colors to red and black. The name was made up by the team's owner, Peter Karmanos, instead of the usual contest that sometimes is held for these matters.

Unfortunately, the Entertainment and Sports Arena that the new Carolina hockey team was preparing wouldn't be ready for at least two more years. Because of this, the Hurricanes were forced to play 90 minutes away at the Greensboro Coliseum. This decision was a terrible mistake that would be disastrous for the franchise attendance.

Their crowds wouldn't get better until the season of 1999-2000 when the team faced the New Jersey Devils. Their best playoff crowd would gather at the city of Raleigh and even though they lost the series five games to one, they were given a standing ovation by their crowd, erasing any doubt that the city would never get involved with the team.

The Carolina Hurricanes won their first Stanley Cup in the 2005-06 season defeating the Edmonton Oilers four games to three.

This season, keep an eye on the Canes, they might keep up the good work. Remember, when thinking gamble nhl, there's no better place than LinesMaker.com
