Team Information
Once called the Quebec Nordiques, the Colorado Avalanche made the move for the 1995-96 season, due mostly because financial problems that had much to do with the NHL lockdown during the season of 1994-95. The team was bought by a group of investors in Denver who renamed the team as the Avalanches. The name comes from the amazing and destructive forces the avalanches produce on the well known Rocky Mountains that are located in Colorado.
The new Avalanche was a genuine Stanley Cup contender and wouldn't let their new fans down on their first season representing the Colorado state. They won the Stanley cup on their inaugural year and their star player Joe Sakic would win the Conn Smythe Trophy.
The next season the Avalanches would prove that the fact of winning the Stanley cup on their first season was not a fluke, as they won the President's Trophy for the best overall record in the NHL.
Throughout their brief history in Colorado, the Avalanches have remained and proved that they are part of the NHL elite.
