Team Information
The Columbus Blue Jackets name honors Ohio's patriotism and contribution of its citizens during the Civil War. Ohio contributed with more of its population to the Union Army than any other state.
During a 2002 game, tragedy struck the Columbus Blue Jackets as a flying puck that was errantly shot by Espen Knutsen hit a thirteen year old fan named Brittanie Cecil. This would be the first and only fatality in NHL's 85 year history. For the rest of the season the Blue Jackets would honor Britanie Cecil with a heart shaped decal with her initials "BNC" on their helmets. This tragedy would force the NHL to place protecting nets on all offensive areas of all the league's arenas.
