Originally called the Minnesota North Stars, after the state's motto, the name was changed specifically to Stars when the team moved to Dallas in 1994, since Texas is the lone star state.

Despite the initial doubt to move to Texas at the beginning, the Dallas Stars have experienced relative success since their arrival. Besides their 1999 cup, the Stars have managed to win two President's Trophies, as the team with the best overall regular season performance. They've also won seven Division Titles in the past nine seasons.
