Team Information
As a founding member, the Alberta Oilers joined the WHA. The original owner was the Western Hockey League founder, Bill Hunter. They changed their name to Edmonton Oilers and played all of its games in Edmonton. The name of Oilers was chosen because the city of Edmonton is the leading source of Canada's Oil industry.
In 1978-79, the last season the team would play for the WHA, their fortune would change forever as they sign 17 year old super rookie Wayne Gretzky. The WHA folded that season and the Oilers became one out of the four teams the NHL would adopt.
On their first season on the NHL, Wayne Gretzky captures the Hart Trophy, he was on the verge of greatness and would become one of the NHL's legends later on.
