Team Information
The Montreal Canadiens are the oldest franchise in the NHL. Its actually one of the best known professional sports club in all of North American sports history. The Montreal professional hockey team is one of the original six franchises that began playing when the NHL was created. The official name of the franchise is Le Club de Hockey Canadien and the most common nicknames in English are the 'Habs' or 'The Flying Frenchmen'.
The club was founded on December 4th 1909 by J. Ambrose O'Brien and financed by magnate T.C. Hare. In 1917 the NHL was formed and the Canadiens had the honor of playing the first game ever on this league. They won and their player Joe Malone scored 5 goals, including the first goal in NHL history.
The Montreal Canadiens have won the Stanley Cup on 24 occasions, more than any other NHL team. Until today they are the last Canadian team to have won the cup. This happened during the 1992-93 season.
