Team Information
As the 1974-75 season started, two new expansion teams made their debut in the NHL. These teams were the Kansas City Scouts and the Washington Capitals. Both teams had a bad start, as they went head to head to see which did worse than the other. The Capitals made the worst record in NHL history as they finished last with a devastating 67 lost games out of 80, winning just one game on the road on their fist season.
Things would stay pretty much the same through the rest of the 70's decade and early 80's. By 1982 the "Save the Caps" campaign was launched to move the team to the nation's capital but two last minute events changed the course of things to come. They hired David Poile as General Manager who would successfully attempt one of the best biggest trades in NHL history. He traded Rick Green and Ryan Walter to the Montreal Canadiens for Brian Engblom, Doug Jarvis, Craig Laughlin and Rod Langway. These moves would turn things around for the Capitols as they reached their first playoffs for the first time in the franchise history in the 1982-83 season. Sadly the Capitols were swept by the eventual Stanley Cup defenders, New York Islanders.
For the next 14 seasons the Capitols would reach the playoffs, but never really reaching victory. This helped develop for themselves a reputation for "chokers" on the playoffs.
