NHL Conferences - Northeast

The NHL’s Northeast Conference is one of the oldest and most respected in all of sports, with almost half of the league’s Stanley Cup victories recorded by its teams. These teams, three of which have histories dating back almost 100 years or more are historic, monumental hockey teams.

The NHL’s Northeast Conference is very similar to that of Baseball’s Eastern Divisions and the NBA’s central divisions. Full of history and teams whose histories date back almost a century, the conference is a melting pot of teams that have been around for years and of those added during the rampant expansion years of the 60s and 90s. More often than not, it’s a good bet to put your NHL betting money down on a team from the Northeast, those powerhouses of old.

As one of the “original six” teams in the NHL, the Boston Bruins are steeped in a history and pride that few other teams can claim. As the first American NHL team and the reason the NHL expanded into the US, the Bruins were a powerhouse among the league’s best until World War II decimated the franchise. On hard times until the 1960s, the Bruins, led by Bobby Orr lept back to the forefront of NHL hockey and became one of the best in the league for a long time.

Founded in 1970 during the massive expansion of the NHL to keep up with the growing WHL, the Buffalo Sabres are a perennial contender and powerhouse in today’s NHL. Having never won the Stanley cup though, the Sabres are still a relatively untested team in terms of their championship caliber.

The Montreal Canadiens are one of NHL betting’s favorites, especially if you live in Canada. The Canadiens have been around since 1909, even 8 years before the NHL was founded with them as one of the first four teams. They stuck around through the rough years of Depression and World War II and were one of the Original Six, and have won the Stanley Cup 24 times in their 98 years. These are the Yankees of hockey.

The Ottawa Senators are actually a relatively new team, formed in 1992 as an expansion team. However, there was an Ottawa Senators team as long ago as 1893 and as one of the four founding NHL teams, the Senators name is as old as hockey itself. In their 15 years since expansion, the Senators have been contenders many times but have yet to win a Conference title or Stanley Cup. This year however, NHL betting has them at the number one spot, poised to knock off some of the year’s best, such as Buffalo.

As the second most winning team of all time in the NHL with 13 Stanley Cups, the Toronto Maple Leafs are also one of the first four teams from 1917 and one of the “Original Six” during the war years. Historically and in fan base, the Maple Leafs are a symbol of NHL hockey.

And so it is that the Northeast Division in the NHL is one of the most important and oldest divisions in sport with three of the Original Six and two of the three original 1917 teams. The history here is deep.
