Internet Hockey Spreads
Length and Format of the NHL Season
The NHL season is a long affair, full of 82 games, possibly confusing points allocation and an exciting, two month long playoff schedule. It’s good to know just how many games are played and when.
Like any major sport, the NHL season is broken down into a very carefully planned sequence of series and games within set conferences. The internet hockey spreads may be in favor of one team over another, but at times certain teams may not even play each other in a given year.
The season is made up of 82 games, starting in the first Wednesday of October. The season lasts until the first week or two of April, and then the playoffs through until June. In all, the NHL season is 8 and a half months long and takes teams all across the dual landscapes of Canada and the US. The league is split into two major conferences, East and West.
Within these Conferences there are three divisions each. Within each division are five teams. These five teams will play each other 8 times each, for a total of 32 games. Then each team plays outside of their division, within the conference for another 40 games, 4 against each team. The remaining 10 games are split up among teams from the other Conference, making a total of 82. It’s in those 10 games that you’ll notice some of the many teams missing. Every year, there are 5 teams in the NHL that a team will not play, meaning those prospective internet hockey spreads are just pipe dreams and have no real bearing.
Because Hockey was long a game that could end in a tie, the league recently adopted the popular rule of adding a shootout to the end of the game if overtime doesn’t result in a winner. Because there are three possible outcomes, teams are awarded points based on not only wins and losses, but these overtime sessions as well. A win is awarded 2 points, a loss 0 points, and a loss in overtime or shootout 1 point. Quite literally offering spreads between the teams at the end of the season, a team’s playoff position can easily be decided by how many games are lost in overtime as opposed to straight up wins.
Once the regular season is over, the teams are seeded by their position in their divisions. The three division winners are the top three seeds and the remaining teams are seeded according to the amount of points they have, all of them reseeded after each round. A total of 8 teams from each division make the playoffs for four total rounds of best of seven series. Hence, the hockey playoffs are a two month long affair.
Figuring out your internet hockey spreads as the season rears into the playoffs can be quite hard as some teams are dropped to lower seeds because of their position in a strong division or early season woes. But keep in mind, that those playoffs are a 16 win affair before a team hoists the Stanley Cup above their head.
