NCAA Tournament Point Spread

NCAA Tournament Spread: A Brief Explanation

This article discusses spreads and how they are used for betting. More specifically the article discusses how spreads are used in the NCAA Tournament.

The largest sporting event for college athletics is the NCAA Tournament. Fans absolutely love to watch each and every one of the six rounds of this basketball tournament. Many fans, in an effort to make the games mean even more than they already do, place bets on the NCAA Tournament.

Fans can bet on a variety of different aspects of the Tournament. Filling–out a bracket with winners for each round is probably the most popular form of betting. The next most popular is probably betting on individual games. For those fans who bet on individual games, they need to pay attention to the NCAA Tournament spread for each of these games.

A spread is the amount of points by which one team is supposed to beat another team. For example, if team A played team B, and team A was slightly better, then they would be favored by maybe five points. That would make the spread five points. So, if you bet on team A, they would have to win by more than five points in order for you to win the bet. If you bet on team B they would have to win or lose by less than five points for you to win.

So you see that betting on who will win a game isn’t as easy as just selecting who you think the better team may be. You have to look at the NCAA Tournament spread and try to decide if the team will win by more points than that. If they do win by more points then they are said to have “covered the spread”.

The more competitive two teams seem to be with each other the closer the NCAA Tournament spread will be. So, for the early round games, when a high seed is playing a low seed, the spread will be quite large. However, in contrast, during the Final Four when both teams are a one or two seed then the NCAA Tournament spread will be very low. This makes it tough to pick a winner no matter which two teams are playing.

The NCAA Tournament is very entertaining to watch. Betting on the games makes it even more exciting. Because of the NCAA Tournament spread, every game can be interesting as well ass difficult to pick.
