2005 Super Bowl Odds The Masters Got Fooled
The 2005 Super Bowl odds were heavily in the favor of the New England Patriots. The Carolina Panthers staged two remarkable comebacks to draw close before the Patriots held on for a two point victory.
The 2005 season in the National Football League was one chock full of surprises. The American Conference was again dominated by the New England Patriots and the brilliance of their head coach, Bill Belicheck. Their only real competition for the Patriots was the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts featured the rifle right arm of Peyton Manning, who led the league in all important quarterback statistics. The American Division Championship game was played indoors in Indianapolis. This was supposed to be the year that the Colts derailed the Patriots. However, quarterback Tom Brady always plays big in the important contests with championships on the line. So, the stage was set. To almost everyone’s surprise, New England became an offensive juggernaut and Indianapolis could do nothing to stop the onslaught. By the time the second half had started, Indianapolis threw away their playbook and attempted to match high octane offense versus high octane offense. It became a matter of too little, too late and the New England Patriots advanced to the Super Bowl as the American Conference representative.
In the National Conference, the Philadelphia Eagles were the heavy favorite to advance to the Super Bowl. They handled their Eastern Division quite easily and advanced to the Conference finals. They had good balance between offense and defense, and were confident as they squared off with the Carolina Panthers in Philly. The 2005 Super Bowl odds were just about set for New England versus Philadelphia, but the Carolina Panthers had other plans. A couple of early turnovers shook the confidence of the Eagles, and their offense sputtered in the frigid weather as Carolina outlasted the Eagles and advanced to the Super Bowl as the National Conference representative.
The 2005 Super Bowl odds had the Patriots a solid six point favorite. The Eagles and Panthers got involved in a second half shootout with the Patriots barely outlasting the Panthers by a score of 30-28. While the Patriots had the experience, the master oddsmakers who set the 2005 Super Bowl odds underestimated the offensive prowess of quarterback Jake Delomme, and the Panthers not only covered the spread but almost won the Super Bowl outright.
