About Gambling in Sports — Cries for Legal Sports Betting in A.C.
Recently, a sports gambling operation working out of the poker room in the Borgata was broken up. Cries can now be heard concerning the legalization of sports gambling in New Jersey.
The arrests last week of 23 men in a sports gambling ring run out of the Borgata Hotel and Casino have brought cries throughout the country as well as in the State of New Jersey in a move to legalize gambling in sports on a professional level. Any discussion about gambling in sports has to do with concerns over the possible addiction of the sports bettor, and the infiltration of organized crime into sports on a more intimate level.
There are sports betting centers all over the country. What made the case in Atlantic City noteworthy was that the betting ring was operating out of the poker room in the luxurious Borgata Casino, and that the majority of those arrested were "made" mob figures from the nearby Philadelphia area.
When the discussion is about gambling in sports, we must remember that there would be no harm to the professional game sports, because gambling presently exists in 4 states and in countries worldwide. Proposed legislation could restrict sports gambling in Atlantic City to the 12 major casinos, and would permit wagering only on professional sports.
If you think about gambling in sports for a minute, it would make perfect sense to legalize it, because it would eliminate a great deal of the illegality now associated with sports gambling that is conducted off limits. It would be a boon to the existing casino business directly and indirectly, and it would pique interest and stimulate business in the major casinos in Atlantic City.
