Boxing Betting Odds Bettor Watch Out for Changes
The fans of boxing heighten their interest in the event by backing their fighter with a monetary wager. There have been a number of historic boxing upsets over the years on which huge fortunes were made by shrewd sports betting investors.
Boxing has always been a favorite with the sports betting investor. We can all remember as youngsters those friends who were always into fighting and wrestling. The fights were not vicious matches between friends, just play fighting. Once boredom set in during the long, hot summer vacation, our gang would look for amusement and entertainment with these contests. I enjoyed creating a betting atmosphere at these events, and all of us would bet on the outcome of a match. At stake could be anything from a Spaulding (AKA Spaldeen) rubber ball, to a ten set of Topps baseball cards (Bowman’s were also popular), to a Three Musketeers Bar. These childish matches were my first experience with betting on pugilistic events, and I liked the excitement of rooting for someone you have also supported in a wager.
Boxing has always been a popular sport. Around a century ago, the fight promoters themselves used to book bets on the outcome of the fights they arranged and promoted. Monetary support for a fighter of one’s choice heightens the excitement and interest in the athlete and in the event. Additionally, boxing is known for the once in a decade mammoth upset which can render huge paydays to those sports betting investors who played their hunches wisely. In 1927, one of the all time great years in the history of sports in America, Gene Tunney upset Jack Dempsey to win the Heavyweight Championship of the World and thus retain his Title despite being knocked down to the canvas for more than a ten second count. Cassius Clay, later known as Mohammed Ali, was an 8-1 underdog on the boxing betting odds when he stopped Charles “Sonny” Liston in the seventh round of their World Heavyweight Championship Fight in Miami, Florida in 1964. In 1990, Heavyweight Champ Mike Tyson was a 10- 1 boxing betting odds favorite over Buster Douglas in Japan, but Douglas showed no fear of Tyson’s vaunted power and knocked him cold in the 10th round. It is imperative in a sport such as boxing for the investor to monitor the boxing betting odds closely so that an informed wager can be placed.
