Gambling in Sports Internet Web Sites Flourish
Gambling in sports has been a family tradition in America passed down over the generations. The Internet has stimulated an even greater number of bettors into the recreational activity of gambling in sports.
Gambling in sports today has become a billion dollar industry world wide. In days gone by, it was not always easy to place a bet on sporting events. I had an Uncle Joe who was a great guy. He was my mom’s older brother, and he and my mom grew up along with another brother and sister in a brownstone apartment on Fourth Avenue and 59th Street in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn. Uncle Joe and my dad, who had a short fling with the Philadelphia Phillies in the forties, became best pals, and for obvious reasons. It was a family tradition for Uncle Joe, his wife and my cousin Ray to make the trek from Bay Ridge along the Belt Parkway into the Ozone Park section of Queens every Sunday after the 7:30 AM Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Bay Ridge on 5th Avenue and 60th Street. By the time they arrived for our Sunday breakfast feast, I was returning home from the Children’s Mass at 9 AM at Holy Child Jesus Church.
If Father Shine said the Mass, I would get home ten minutes earlier than if Monsignor Murray or Father Malm presided over the Mass. While the women made small talk cooking the bacon, eggs and pancakes, I would be summoned to go to Gorecki’s Bakery on 115th Street and pick up a dozen rolls with a mixed dozen crumb buns and crullers for the family. By the time I returned home, my dad and Uncle Joe had carved out ample space in the living room to review the morning lines as listed in the New York Sunday News and the Long Island Sunday Press. Their routine frequently involved an escalation of their voices over the morning’s time. However, by 11 AM, all was well and the two of them were off in my Dad’s ten year old Cadillac Fleetwood to seek out Milton, a local driver from the Taxi garage on 127th Street and Hillside Avenue in Kew Gardens. Milt could always be found riding up and down on Lefferts Boulevard taking fares to and from the Union Turnpike Subway stop or stopping to pick up betting slips from his loyal customers. This was life how I knew it almost 50 years ago.
Today, gambling in sports is a billion dollar business that continues to grow year by year. Gambling in sports has attracted thousands of new customers due to Internet access, and there is no sign of this popularity waning anytime soon.
